Introduction

The Philips DVP-5960 is a DivX/Xvid DVD Player. The DVP-5960 uses Mediatek 1389DE chips to handle video processing and also uses a Mediatek 1392 chip to handle some of its additional features. It supports HDMI upscaling and has a USB port. On this page I'm concerned with compatible USB Hard Drives, USB/Flash Drives/Keys and Firmware Mods. Anyone interested in the differences between the 5960 and the 5140 (similar, but no HDMI upscaling or USB port) can refer to this page. It's a very good comparison of these 2 players.

The info on this page has been gleaned from various places on the net. Mainly the following topics on Softpedia and VideoHelp.

  • Philips DVP5960 and USB - External USB Hard Drives
  • Philips DVP 5960, compatible USB Key List - USB Flash Drives/Keys
  • Philips 5960/12 Firmware. Help With Subtitles., Subtitle font problem. Firmware attached - Firmwares.

Region Free Hack

If you'd like to make your player region free follow these steps:

  1. Turn on the unit
  2. Open the loading tray
  3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
  4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
  5. Enter 138931
  6. You will now see the current region code displayed
  7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
  8. Press the "Play" button on the remote

Handy Things To Know

  • If you hold the stop button on the remote you can eject the tray. Hold it again and it closes!
  • For some reason the player does not like snow. So don't get upset if your watching a movies with snow in it and the picture goes jerky. None of the current firmware updates will make a difference.

  12. My TV does not support HDCP. Can this be disabled?
  13. Some of my AVI files are stuttering. What can I do?
  14. My AVI files appear in the wrong order over USB, can this be fixed?
  1. When I open/close the tray on my player it's very loud, as it is when booting up. Is there something wrong?

It's OK. The tray on the player and on boot up is quite noisy.
  2. How do I get DTS, 2.1, 5.1 Audio?

There is no audio decoder in the player. You must use an external decoder using the digital coaxial output.
  3. What software should I use to burn a firmware onto a CD-R?

DON'T use windows to create a firmware upgrade disc. You could turn your player into a brick. You can download a trial copy of Nero from http://www.nero.com

Then just follow the instructions's in the firmwares section.

  4. How many files can I store in a folder?

    600
  5. Why am I getting a "Video Resolution Not Supported" message?

The player supports 720x576 (PAL) or 720x480 (NTSC) Maximum Video Resolution. You can use GSpot to check the resolution of your AVI file. The player does not downscale resolutions over the maximum as it does not have the video memory to do so... But you can resize the AVI yourself! Here's a guide.
  6. Why am I getting a "GMC Not Supported" message?

Your AVI file uses GMC. To remove GMC/QPEL try the following guide.
  7. Why am I getting a "Device Not Supported" message?

The USB device you've plugged in is not compatible with the player.
  8. Filenames are very short in the browser. Can I make them longer?

This depends on whether you are using DVD's or a USB device:
    • If you are using DVD's you can upgrade with a modded firmware. See the ones by wireless2104 in the firmwares section below. You will get 32 characters in total.
    • If your using a USB device you will be limited by the DOS 8.3 filename convention. Longer filenames on a FAT32 filesystem are patented by Microsoft and are not readily available. So all you get is 8 characters, and if your filename is longer than 8 characters then you only get 6 plus a tilde(~) symbol and a number, e.g. myfile~1. You can however get a few more character by naming your folders differently. If you name them eight character, then a dot, and then a further three characters then that is what you will see, e.g. "mylongfi.les" folder will display as typed.
  9. What do I do to see subtitles with my AVI file?

Your subtitles need to be in either ".srt" or ".sub/.idx" format. They must also have the same name as the AVI file. For example, "mymovie.avi" would have to have "mymovie.idx" and "mymovie.sub" with it in the same folder to be able to view the subtitles.
  10. I'd like to change the way subtitles are displayed. How do I do this?

Have a look at the guide about modifying subtitle display in firmwares. I'm also adding an extra guide about changing codepages. For more information on codepages see here.
  11. My 5960/12 stretches all 4:3 MPEG-2 files (*.mpg) to 16:9 on my 16:9 TV set?

There is no automatic aspect ratio detection for MPEG2 files. Changing the TV display option to 4:3 helps with 4:3 MPEG2 clips (*.mpg), but this way 16:9 MPEG2 files will be displayed in 4:3 as well. So you'll need to change back to 16:9 each time you want to view a 16:9 MPEG2 file. Alternatively you could convert all your MPEG2 files to DivX/XviD files...
  12. My TV does not support HDCP. Can this be disabled?

Currently the answer is no. Philips can't add it as a feature because they must support it to be standards compliant. No modder has managed it yet either. If anyone hear's of success here let me know.
  13. Some of my AVI files are stuttering. What can I do?

First try the packed bitstream test files. If some of them stutter then you try a modded firmware. See the ones by wireless2104 in the firmwares section below with packed bitstream support. You could also try using MPEG4Modifer, it's listed under Applications on the Guides And Links Page. If you have very high motion video then the USB port may not be fast enough to deal with the video. Some very high motion video will not even be able to be viewed when using a DVD, it's rare but it happens.
  14. My AVI files appear in the wrong order over USB, can this be fixed?

Just use FolderSort you'll find it under Applications on the Guides And Links Page.

Issues and Wishlist

  • When upscaling to 1080p there is a black bar at the bottom of the screen.
  • Disabling HDCP not possible, HDCP On/Off would be nice
  • Cannot use VOB/IFO over USB, bandwidth required too high
  • No automatic aspect ratio detection in MPEG2 files
  • Packed Bitstream support for XviD files removed from Original Philips Firmware.
  • GoTo feature for DivX files not implemented in player
  • No Long filenames support over USB (Long filename support available via DVD using a modded firmware).

Compatibility with External USB Hard Drives

I usually recommend people use a 7200RPM hard disk, with a 16MB buffer in an enclosure with its own power supply. Some slower spinning drives with smaller buffers can have problems in finding the data quick enough on the disk, therefore causing stuttering.

If you want to use an external hard disk with the 5960 you'll need to follow these rules:

  1. Make sure it has an external power connection, it must be powered externally before connecting to the player
  2. Drive must be formatted as FAT32 (see formatters below!)
  3. FAT32 partition must be primary.

Windows can't format a drive larger than 32GB as FAT32 but these 2 tools will allow you to do it. Both tools are free.

  • Swissknife - GUI
  • fat32format - Command Line

Here I have only added HDD's that do not supply there own power. Any extenal hdd/enlcosure with it's own power source will work once it has been formatted as above.

Even drives without there own power source must be formatted as above.

If a drive is listed in the bad section. It does not mean it will not work. Only that it won't work without a power source.

Good List:
  • Ipod 3rd Generation
  • IPod 4th Generation
  • iRiver H140
  • Mapower Ext 2.5 inch with a 4200 RPM Fujitsu Disk

Firmware Mods

The info on this page is really just for the DVP-5960 player. I have now added the latest firmwares for the DVP5960/37 as well as the previous firmwares for the DVP5960/12 and the DVP5960/05. See section above about different hardware versions.

If I've listed your firmware mod and you would like it removed just PM me (instructions above).

DON'T use windows to create a firmware upgrade disc. You could turn your player into a brick. You can download a trial copy of Nero from http://www.nero.com

Then just follow the instructions's below.

Upgrade Procedure

Let's start with instructions on how to upgrade your firmware once you have the firmware file...

You will need the following items:

  • Personal Computer
  • CD-R/RW drive and writing application
  • 1x blank CD-R

Check current software version

  1. POWER ON the set
  2. Press SYSTEM MENU key to enter
  3. Press < or > to navigate to GENERAL
  4. Press keys 1,3,7,9 successively

Write files to CD-R/RW

  • File System CD-ROM Joliet
  • File name length: max 31 chars (ISO Level 2)

  • Single session
  • Write speed: low
  • Finalize the disc.

Steps to Upgrade Software

  1. Power on the set and put in the disc.
  2. A message will be displayed on the OSD after the upgrade file is recognized.
  3. Follow the instruction displayed on the TV Screen – Press “OK” to upgrade (if applicable)
  4. After reading the file, the disc will be ejected
  5. Remove the disc, but DO NOT close the tray
  6. Wait approximately 3-5 minutes for the software to be upgraded
  7. The set will restart itself once the upgrade is completed.
  8. Caution: Do not unplug or power off the set while upgrading in progress.

A note about Codepages

The codepage in a firmware is the character set used to display letters and symbols. If characters are displaying incorrectly on your player you probably have the wrong codepage in your firmware. All three of the codepages listed below should display English correctly. It's the other letters with accents etc. in other languages which are affected by codepage type. Here's a list of codepages and their respective countries.

Codepage 1250 (Central Europe - Latin 2)
This Codepage is designed for Central Europe languages: Albanian, Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian (Latin), Slovak, Slovenian.
Codepage 1252 (ANSI - Latin 1)
This Codepage is designed for Latin 1 languages: Afrikaans, Basque, Catalan, Danish, Dutch, English, Faroese, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Malay, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish.
Codepage 1253 (Greek)
This Codepage is designed for Greek.
Codepage 1254 (Turkish)
This Codepage is designed for Turkic languages: Azeri (Latin), Turkish, Uzbek (Latin).

Similar mod to F-Swed firmware. So you get support for packed bit streams. Also the skin was changed and subtitles moved to a better viewing place.

Note: you may lose some of the improvements from the latest Philips firmware. Not sure which of these are based in the ARM code, maybe you will let me know...

Used the Wireless mod with PB support—works great. As a note, I did not lose Multichannel output via coaxial out when connected to HDMI. The skin is wonderful—can’t figure out why Philips uses the very cheap looking skin for this model. It would have cost them nothing to have done something nice. In any event, many thanks for your efforts. Appreciated !

just to let everyone know – you can fill the cd with other files so that you dont waste any space upgrading the firmware – i just put the firmware update in the top directory and it detected it. The goto time function is most useful, and the ff/rw times are greatly improved in the .40 update (latest).

I have a problem! I was told by the salesman (16 months ago) that this dvd player will support external hard drives via USB. My problem is that I have a disk formatted as FAT32 but still unrecognizable (Lacie 500GB 7200rpm).
Is there any chance that one of these firmwares will enable my player to read this (or other) external drive?
Thanks!

I just got a Samsung LN32A300 720p HDTV. I connected it to the DVP5960 with a 6ft HDMI cable and all I get is “No Signal”. I tried a few different firmwares and nothing. If I disconnect or turn off the player, it changes from “No Signal” to “Check Cable”, so clearly there is some difference between off and on… but I wish I could get a signal :/

Hi. First of all, I’d just like to say well done for such an incredibly detailed site regarding this product. A lot of the information was extremely useful.
I have got one question though, my only problem with this DVD player is the stuttering of Packed Bitstream AVIs. Now there are too many modified firmwares for me to understand, so I need your opinion. Which do you think is the safest one to use solely to fix the stuttering (and maybe long filenames)? Also, can this firmware upgrade be reversed if it f**** up?

Hi
Is the anyone have DVP5960/12 Serial backup?
I installed CD backup with serial cable, and My DVD start working, but when i connect my DVD with HDMI, VGA signal lost after 10-15 seconds, and just return only re-installing HDMI cable or pushing upscale button. But signal lost again 10-15 seconds later.

That’s why I need backup file (It must be 2 MB size, mtkrenamer, or other programs can’t convert proper serial file, these serial files couldn’t solve my problem, serial file must created by mtktool backup)

Can u send 5960/12 Serial backup file created by mtktool please?

Hey! So You can add the WD 1600JD Media Center to the list of powered hard drives that don’t work. From my searching, the memory card reader shows up before the drive itself, causing the 5960 to not read. I’ve been trying forever, and i’ve seen a few people with this problem.

And also, the WD Passport 250GB also doesn’t work when attached to a powered usb hub. I’m using a belkin hub. Both the drives are formatted to fat32. I’ve tried everything, and there is no reason they shouldn’t work. But they don’t.

I do have two flash drives that work, so I know it’s not the port on the player.

Any ideas would be great.

Hi folks! Those who have the same problem with the remote control like I do: here is not a real solution but maybe a useful information: the problem is obviously NOT the remote control but the IR-sensor in the dvd-player. I have a Philips LCD an its led-lamp always blinks whenever I press a button on the RC of the dvd-player. I think this shows pretty good that the RC is strong enough but NOT the sensor in the player. I think the FW update wouldn’t change anything since this seems to be a hardware problem.

Well, this is no solution like I said earlier but should prevent anyone from hoping that a universal RC will make any difference.

This player is just great but leaks in a very important and basic feature: a well working remote control! I don’t know what philips did when they gave the “OK” to distribute this player…but they’ve to change this!

Anyway, this is a very good site and helped me to get through some issues.

Thanks & good night!

Thanks for the firmware! I’ve been using it on a 3960 for a few months now. All I had to do is rename the file to my model number instead of 5960 and it went all well. It always remembers my 1080i setting now. Although I think the DivX/Xvid playback has lost a bit of its sharpness, but maybe I’m just imagining.

I have this DVD player and want to get an external drive for it. I was wondering if anyone knew if the ‘Sharkoon SATA quickport’ would work with it?

I thought if I got one for the PC and one for the DVD player It would be much easier than moving the whole external drive every time I wanted to add files I could just move the HD itself.

I assume it would work since it has it’s own power source, and the guide says any external drive with it’s own power will work. But thought it best to get a second opinion before actually buying.

Thanks.

Hi,

Am in the UK and have had a DVP5960 for a while now, and am very happy with it.

Currently is has 12.06.36.40 firmware on it.

Problem – Just bough a flip ultra camcorder – http://www.theflip.com/products.shtml – that has a usb built in so I can plug it directly into the DVP.

Doing this I can watch the avi’s that it produces directly by plugging it in. But there is no sound, because it is coming up with ‘audio codec not supported’.

Looking at the flip box. It seems to record in mpeg4 at 30 frames per second.

Question – Is there any modified firmware, or updates that I can make to the DVP5960 that can make it play the videos (with sound) when I plug the Flip video in it?

i am tempted to update the 3960/37 with your 5960 firmware, looks like i will loose the “Fix for Multichannel output via coaxial out when connected to HDMI”, do you know:
1) if i will also loose the hability to play nero digital videos (standard profile) with this 5960 firmware?

and also
2) if i use your 5960 fw can i revert to my 3960 firmware?

the 5960 37B works awesome with my seagate free agent 750 GB. Here is what needs be done, 1> Download seagate Disc Wizard. 2> from windows comp’ mgmt’ delete the 698GB NTFS partition. 3> Run seagate wizard and create 1 single FAT32 primary partition of full capacity ~ 698 GB (Partial with remaining unallocated also works). 4> copy over divx/mpeg2 files 5> With 5960 OFF and no DISC connect yur powered ON USB HD to the player and power up and NJoy…This works…. I guess the KEY for the 5960 to recognize any external USB powered HD is that it’s Master Boot Record should show a single primary FAT32 partition…and ofcourse you are limited to the DOS8.3 format for file names on the display…But hey thats OK..as long as a I can browse and play all my media via the remote :-) cheers.

Been using an internal HD (320WD)in a external inclosure for a couple of years now. Since its getting full I decided to use another I had around (160Maxtor) and now I got a problem.
With the 320 I used folders and sub-folders and subs of those with no problems. With the 160 if I insert the avi into each individual folder no problem but if I attempt to put the avi into a folder called PIRATES_1 which is in a folder called P which is in a folder called MOVIES it freezes up at the MOVIE folder and I cant seem to get anywhere else….Any ideas
The above is just an example…Using a alphabetized sub folder helps me from having to go through 150 or more files to get to the last one

My Philips DVP5960 has firmware 37.06042.33. Downloaded movies avi, play fine, those I record as MPEG and convert play fine except for a brief stutter around the 12 minute mark on a 30 minute program, the video and the audio both stutter for perhaps 20 seconds and then all is fine.

They play fine with Windows Media Player. The total bit rate is well below USB 1 standards, I am not altering the fps and I have tried both direct audio encoding and tried matching audio length to video length with the same results. They are not PB files.

Any ideas if a Firware update would correct this? Also the latest firmware on Philips site has a lower number than mine, does that mean it is older and a downgrade of features?

Try ripping something with a different conversion program. What are you using at the moment?

Hi,
I think DVP5960 has a little bug.
When playing progressive DVDs it always deinterlaces them before sending the video through HDMI at 720p. I’m quite sensitive to these artifacts. Xvid, on the other hand, does not go through deinterlacing.

I tried to rip a fragment of a DVD movie into Xvid (at best settings), and the quality was better than the original. (strange!)

Wouldn’t it be possible to hack the firmware to NOT deinterlace progressive MPEG2 frames in DVDs? [apart from unnecessary, it degrades picture]

(thanks for all the info)

All you need to get 5.1 is to buy a coaxial cable and connect the coaxial socket on the back of the Philips to the coaxial socket on the back of the Sherwood. Select the right input on the Sherwood. Of course you also need 5 or 6 speakers.

I decided to try and watch them by connecting the Philips to my Panasonic DMR-EX75EB DVD recorder using the scart cable and then using an S-VHS cable to the digital projector. Thanks for all of the advice & tips. I actually tried just putting in a commercial DVD (ala Netflix), and the rolling pic stopped! Had a great weekend of watching avi pix (in our home, not having to shell out $$ for the theatres!) Again, thanks so much!

BTW, I’m using a SanDisk Cruzer Micro, 8GB, formatted FAT32, and after removing the U3 stuff – working perfectly except a little stuttering during “fast moving” scenes i.e. water in river scenes in No Country For Old Men.

“The issue is that the picture I get is constantly rolling”

I had the same problem after a firmware update. It set itself to Multi from NTSC. So, assuming you are trying to get from Multi to NTSC, here is the button sequence I had to use:

setup
right
right
ok
ok
down
ok
left
ok

Then you should be able to see another confirm request. left, ok and you’re done.

If it set to Pal and you’re going to NTSC, it’ll be 2 downs after the 2 ok’s.

If you don’t know what it’s set to, eject the tray and then hold down 3 for a few seconds and it should say in the top left corner of the rolling screen.

Let me know if that works for you.

Hi thanks for all your helpful info and links – I have almost the perfect home theatre system now without relying on a noisy PC!
I’d thouht I’d give something back;
This player DOES support resume playback even after coming out of standby – this includes avi files too!
Stop your current video/dvd,
Press stop again,
Power off (standby).
Power on,
Allow the dvd to start, select play then hit next chapter button and it will resume!
For avi;
load up your usb device, select the previous avi you were watching, click play, allow it to load and start playing, hit next chapter button and viola!

I hope this helps!

Hello,
I have a 5960/12 connected HDMI-HDMI on a SONY KDL32S3000.
With a 16:9 DVD, the image format is good, but with a 4:3 DVD (for example ThePolice Synchronicity concert) , the image is stretched.
And with an HDMI connection, no way to change the image format on the TV : “unavailable function”.

The only way I found in order to control the format (by the TV) is to connect with Scart AND disconnect the HDMI!

Does anyone know sth about this pb? something as auto detection of format or change the format from the player would be nice…

I received the Philips DVP5960/37 as a gift, quite excited to start watching DivX movies via USB. The issue is that the picture I get is constantly rolling. I’ve referenced the Philips site and followed their instructions to fix it, but it didn’t work. I also tried changing the setting via the “settings” menu (using the manual as a guide b/c I couldn’t see the image on the screen w/o feeling ill) from PAL to NTCB (sp?), with no luck. I also tried pressing the “Upscale” button – didn’t work either. I haven’t tried updating the firmware yet – don’t want to mess anything up. I’d really like to get this player to work, before I exchange it for another Philips DVP5960. Thoughts?

I suppose both models are on the same platform and modded FWs wouldn’t be too difficult to implement…

Thank you for considering this, I think readers should find in here at least an announcement if this bigger brother of 5960 would be listed in here.

Best regards,
Costi B.

Hi guys! I have bought a Philips 5960/12 a week ago. My TV set is 4:3. Video is connected through a single analogue exit (my old Sony TV doesn’t support any other connection). The thing is that i can’t get the difference between 4:3 pan scan and 4:3 letterbox. Changing this settings do not affect picture at all. In both cases i see something “in the middle” between full screen 4:3 pan scan and 4:3 letterbox. I know it, because i still have small black stripes on top and bottom, but the sides are cropped a little too. I can see that original size picture is cropped, when i do zoom 1/2.
Any solutions known to make 4:3 pan scan and 4:3 letterbox work as supposed?

I’ve got a Sandisk Cruzer that I like to chuck xvids onto to plug straight into the 5960/05(UK) to watch things. I keep getting stuttery/jerky playback when the picture gets a little complicated. I was using offical Philips latest firmware, but have now put Porkupan firmware on to try to resolve this – hasn’t worked. Any suggestions?

I have a WD Essentials 500gb which i connect to my 5960 with all my .avi movies and tv shows. Does anybody else do this and if so what are their experiences and what f/ware do they use? I am currently copying all movies to the drive so havent connected it to the player yet but know that the filenames will be unreadable which is quite a setback.

Hi,
I’ve got Philips 5960/12 and I’ve got HD 300Gb.
The order of the movies is that of recording

Why the files (movies) meet disordered on my hard disk?

I want that the movies are ordained for name.

Since I can solve it?

Sorry for my poor english..

“I’m using the latest Philips firmware, does this mean that PB isn’t unlocked on mine?

If I were to try a firmware from this site, would I be able to go back to the philips firmware after? Which firmware should I be going for? The Porkupan one?”

Yes, you can go back to Philips orig firmware if you want to.

For packed bitstream support use Porkupan 8.3. However you’ll lose bitstream digital audio out via coax (DD5.1, DTS) if you’re hooked up with HDMI (PCM is fine though).

For digital coax out support when connected through HDMI use Temi version 2. However you need to unpacked packed avi’s for smooth playback.

“Question though – in the features it mentions “3 font sizes”. Does this refer to the subtitles? If so, how do I actually change the size of the subtitles?”

On the Preference page scroll downwards and it will show (doesn’t show on 1st screen as there are more options). Small, medium and large

My Audio comes via coax to an digital audio Receiver.
My whishes are:
OUPs off
GOTO in DVD mode

Which Firmware should I Download to have this features.

Thanks to the Modders for their great work.

I wish, I could do that too….

Just got the 5960 and tried the example vids on this site to test the packed bitstream.

Vid A plays fine as expect, vids B & D played (including audio) but were quite jerky and not smooth when the camera panned.

Unpacked the audio using the MPEG4Modifier and both B & D played fine.

I’m using the latest Philips firmware, does this mean that PB isn’t unlocked on mine?

If I were to try a firmware from this site, would I be able to go back to the philips firmware after? Which firmware should I be going for? The Porkupan one?

Hi,
Two quick questions…
1.Does this play NTSC DVD’s (with no colour balance problems),
...and…
2.More importantly, can anyone tell me if this machine has any problems playing “Data Disc DVD’s” (i.e. VOB’s particularly NTSC Video Files/MPGS’s/VCD’s/SVCD’s/MP3’s that I’ve downloaded/backed up via Nero).

I’m asking this as I’ve come across problems finding a DVD/DivX Player
that will recognise the files,(let alone play them with Audio).

Any information would be very gratefully received,

Thanks

For Mrga:

“So, to clear things up, you tell me I can use the newest firmware from Wireless2104 or Temi to get long titles and still keep multichannel output over coax?”

Yes, you have to chose a firmware “without” packed bitstream support.

Temi’s firmware (5960_12_Temi_V2_HDMI_AUDIO.zip) is OK if Codepage 1252 is suitable for you.

(By the way, I’m txemix not Tam, name is under the message.)

So it is okay to downgrade my firmware and that won’t brick my unit? What about if I end up not liking the features I may lose and want to upgrade again, that won’t be a problem if I have downgraded? (I’ve never really firmware updated anything before so I have no experience in this)

Hi!
Great Site you got here :)
I got a WD Passport 2.5” 120GB, and it dosent work :( I tried with a USBhub with external power but I only get: “Device not supported”. The USBhub is:
http://www.cnet.com.tw/product/cnusb-24.htm
And I plug in the external power first, then the Hub into the DVD-player, then I get the error. :(
Is it because the HUB or dosent the DVD support USBhubs?

Tam, thank you for your answer. I was confused because within each modified firmware description, there is text:

“Current list of features which are lost with this firmware:

* Fix for Multichannel output via coaxial out when connected to HDMI”

Hi, great site – I’ve a question however.

I’ve installed porkupan’s firmware and generally it’s great but I can’t get the ISO resume or GOTO features to work.

Hitting the ‘NEXT’ button just goes to next chapter as before and ‘TITLE’ just shows the circle with the line through it suggesting that the command isn’t valid.

I know I must be missing something extremely obvious – any pointers?

Mrga:

“If all modified firmwares are based on genuine firmware 12.06.36.40, how is it possible that none of them includes fix for multichannel output via coaxial out when connected to HDMI?”

Some of them include the fix. Those that do not use the original ARM code which has proper packed bitstream support.

You have to choose firmwares “without” packed bitstream support (actually they support it, but not as well as original firwmare), for example Temi o Wireless1204.

None of the Porkupan versions include the fix, but you replace the ARM code in the Porkupan firwmare with the Temi’s one (I did, because of wanted ISO resume).

I updated the firmware on a DVP-5960/37 manufactured in October 2007. The screen went all black and white and flashing. I sent the player back and got another one. It did the same thing.

It seems that they will randomly go to PAL output instead of NTSC when you upgrade the firmware. Note that it will do this with the factory firmware just as well as the modified version.

Fortunately, I was able to see the screen well enough to change it back to NTSC. I am using an ATI All-In_Wonder card. I don’t know how well a real TV will display PAL video.

You use the setup button on the remote and go to the video screen to fix it.

Thanks for all the work.
Is there any way to adjust the time that a photo is shown for in the photo viewing mode? It seems a shame it takes about 8 seconds for it to draw the high-res image and then it changes it about 5 seconds later. Pausing during drwaing doesn’t pause on the completed image it pauses the half-finished one. I’d be happy with a fixed display time of say 20 seconds if ithat would be possible in a firmware fix.
The dream would be for it to use double buffering so that we never see the redraw but that would be too much to ask.

They play fine, but at some point i.e after 1hr 54mins, they stop playing.

I can’t work out why.
It will play all my files, but after a certain time, different for some movies, it just stops.

These movies play fine, all the way to the end on my computer, so there doesn’t seem to be any problems with them.

We bought the DVP5960 several months ago and it’s driving us nuts, so much so that we’re on the verge of buying another player. Hi, I just got the DVP5960/37 and it won’t play MP4’s encoded with Nero, but I have a DVP3960/37 that does. I know that they aren’t advertised to play them, and they aren’t official Nero supported players. Lydokane,

It’s not the file length that matter but the bit rate, if the files are huge then it may have a problem passing the data quick enough.

For say a 50 minute programme, about 750MB is probably the max that it will handle, if your files are larger then there is your problem.

I have this player and bought it JUST for the USB port. I use it often for .avi of my favorite TV programs. Does anybody know the max video size that the player can handle through USB? I ask because I’ve noticed that some of my TV shows are one hour (42 minutes after commercials are removed). I’ve noticed that anything over 45 minutes causes audio/video stuttering. If my show is 30 minute (22 minutes without commercials) then it usually plays fine. I have a firmware with bitstream support that I found on this site. I have tried three different USB keys and the results are the same.

It has been quite some time since I changed the firmware from the original to one that supports bitstream so I am not sure which version I am currently using. How do I check? Are there better firmware versions here?

Thanks,

Lydokane

P.S. Does anybody know why USB 1.0 was used instead of 2.0?

I apologise in case this has been explained before, but it seems that even FAQ hasn’t helped me a lot. I bought this particular dvd player (5980) because I had the impression that I would be able to play all those high definition avi files I had gotten in a >720 resolution. Maybe I have false information, but since this player claims to play 720p/1080i and 1080p through upscaling, shouldn’t I be able to play even those files as well?! So, why a resolution >720 isn’t supported?

I’m using a simple hdmi in-out cable for connecting to my Sony KDL 40U2000. Should I disconnect the scart cable first…because it seems that I can’t connect through HDMI at all, since I get no picture. Is there a chance that the cable is problematic?

Thank you in advance for any information you can provide me with.

Reply

Nope, it can upscale to 720p/1080p, but all video resolution must still be less than or equal to 720.

All it means is that the dvd player can output video in your TV's native resolution.

I don't have a HDMI TV so maybe someone else will answer your other question...

Just bought a 5960/37, the region free hack works fine. I had the HDMI running through a HDMI-DVI adapter to my 1900×1200 PC monitor, which was working fine (although only at 480p). There was a bar of type on the screen saying that the monitor was not DCHP compliant. I was still able to watch—since applying the hack, however, the screen turns to a snowstorm after about 5 seconds. Did applying the hack change anything?

Hi,

I have problem with 5960/12 I can’t see any disk. When I insert DVD, or another disk I see only load… and nothing. Can you help me?

Try a DVD cleaning disc. Use one with brushes instead of cleaning liquid. If that fails bring it back to store where you got it and get a replacement.

re DVP5960/37 How can I control the volume from the remote? Is it a hidden function or do I need updated firmware? Thanks.

There is a firmware from MeTePe in the firmware's section. But it for the /12. It's not hidden functionality but someone would have to create a new firmware for you with this added in. Ask at the sofpedia forum and someone might be able to help you.

hi. got a problem here… i think my philips player just die on me… i think when i burnt the firmware onto the disc sumthing went wrong without realising it.. was originally using f-swed FW, then decided to upgrade again cause subtitle on some .avi files was too big to read or too blurry. i got the original FW from porkupan on disc and when i tried to reset it back too the its original setting nothing happen.. screen jus blank.. i think i really screw up this time (sud hav just left it as it is)... could anyone help me here as the only option i got left is to see if i a can take the dvd player back to where i purchase it from and see if they willing to let me exchange it for a new player WITHOUT a RECIEPT or BOX :(

thank in advance

Unless you know how to make a serial cable for changing the firmware you will have to bring it back. Try bringing it back first (say you were updating with the a newer Philips firmware not a modded one) and if that doesn't work out have a go at making a cable. The guys at the softpedia forum might be able to help you with that.

Do you know how the sound quality would compare to my old technics or older CD players in general via the rca analogue connections

I see it has a 24 bit 192khz dac. but that dosent necessary make it great sound or does it

Just ordered a Recertified Fantom Titanium II 160GB 7200rpm USB 2.0 External Hard Drive for $39.99 AR from Buy.com. I want to load it with the best of my home movies that have been saved as AVI files. While I know I will need to be creative with short DOS names when I copy the files to the new FAT-32 formatted drive, I would like to make sure they will play. I use Studio 10 to make the AVI file. Are there any special parameters I should specify if I re-create the AVI files?

Avoid using GMC and packed bitstreams. Make sure your resolution has a max of 720x576 (PAL) or 720x480 (NTSC). But you could have just read the FAQ and figured this out for yourself!!!

First thanks for all the great info on this player, learnt a lot but still learning.

Question : i have a 32” Sony CRT UK (PAL) i’m using TMPG to convert DVD’s to xvid. I’m wondering what is the best output resolution to minimise black bars, OR, are the black bars dependent upon the source resolution rather than the output resolution?

Also is Xvid the best quality or is there somethign better? I’m loading the movies onto an external HDD so i’m conscious of the bandwidth constraints of the USB 1.1 port.

cheers.

Reply

720x576 (PAL) or 720x480 (NTSC) are the max resolutions depending on where you are keep to the aspect ratio you need.

The player only plays XviD so it's all you can use, well that or DivX but they are quite similar. The quality of the XviD is the most important. The are many tutorials on the web on how to use XviD.

I think I am a bit late in the game with this but I have just bought my Philips DVD player and now want to get an external hard drive to use with it, something between 120G and 500G. Which one do you suggest is the best and easiest to use?? I read above that I can use my 60G video iPod, will I have to do anything to get this working or can I just ‘plug and play’?

5th Generation iPod's don't work I'm afraid. Have one myself and no joy.

You should probably go with a Western Digital MyBook external drive. The feedback on those has been the best. Not a bad price either.

Hi and first what a great site – lots of helpful info and guides.

Is there a tool that can check the compatibility of a batch of files for playback on the DVP5960? I know GSpot displays info such as Qpel/GMC status and resolution, and there is a guide for batch-checking files
(http://ryan.com.br/gspot_batch_eng.html) but it would be great if there was a tool that quickly and clearly alerted you to files that may not playback on the DVP560.
I’ve burned several discs in the past of TV shows only to find that there is a file on there that is too high a resolution or encoded with GMC and it is a major annoyance!
If anyone knows of such a tool (or maybe plans on programming one!) I’d greatly appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks, Kev

Reply

The guide you referenced below is what I used. You can format the output of the file that GSpot creates. It will be a custom format, so only the information you want will be displayed, one file per line. This is easy enough to search for QPEL or GMC, but resolution is a bit trickier because the numbers will be text. I've never come across a solution to the resolution problem.

Maybe someone will see this post and write one for everyone!!!

On the other hand there are guides to removing QPEL and GMC in the guides and links section, you could just fix them as you come across them (I'm sure there are not too many of them). Buy a large USB Key and save on DVD's!

Sorry my earlier question was misunderstood. The black bar happens when upconverting at 720p or 1080i mode irrespective of the aspect of the dvd(2.35:1 or 1.85:1) on my widescreen TV.
I wanted to know if this problem was removed in any of the new firmware updates along with the multichannel audio support.

Reply

Anyone have a answer for this? I don't have an HDMI TV!!!

I have the latest Philips firmware for my 5960/37. Any updates to that firmware to remove the black bars at the top and bottom of the screens ? I just need that alongwith multichannel audio out with HDMI. I am fine with everything else thats in the current firmware. Thanks a lot.

Reply

The black bars are probably because the movie file your watching hss a different aspect ratio than your TV. Your TV will probably have a ratio of 16:9 (1.77:1). A lot of movies will be encoded at the theatre aspect which is usually 2.35:1, hence the black bars. Open some video files with GSpot (on the downloads page) and check the aspect ratio, just divide the width by the height. If there's one that works out at 1.77:1 or 1.85: 1 (Not sure which is NTSC or PAL!) it should not have black bars. Some DVD players will size up the image and cut off the edges of thee picture making it look like it fills the whole screen. The Philips player does not do this which is correct, so you see the entire picture.

If you have the latest Philips firmware you should already have the multichannel audio with HDMI fix.

The firmware posted here to fix and enable up-scaling above 480p using HDMI-DVI connection is for the DVP5960/12 but I am having this issue with the DVP5960/37 US player, is there a modified firmware available to fix the HDMI to DVI upscale problem on the DVP5960/37. I would be very grateful for any information.

Reply

The user renamed the firmare for the /12 from _12 to _37 and upgraded his player. It worked fine for him because he was using HDMI. This will not work using any other video output. Also note that from now on he would have to use /12 firmwares if he wants to upgrade but he must not rename them. His player now essentially thinks it's a 5960/12

Hi man! First of all, thanks for a really great page!! I wanted to buy a DVP-5960 just so that I could watch movies and stuff from my external harddrive. Unfortunately, the smartass guy working in the computer store said that you can’t play video files from a external disk due to piratecopy matters and that sort of bullsh*t (which broke my heart). But, after visiting this smart site I realised that it’s not true, and now I’m spending my summer vacation watching movies from my ext.disk :).

By the way, the disk I’m using is a Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB, and it works perfectly so far after I formated a 20 GB part of it into FAT32.

For all those frustrated with the remote control (I’m one of them!) I have to say that indeed the curvy front finishing is badly designed because usually we point to the player slightly downwards with the remote. If you try the opposite, i.e. a bit upwards, so that the IR eye has a direct contact with the IR receiver on the player, the situation may improve a little bit. Anyhow, I’m going to buy a new universal remote that will work well with my telly AND the DVD.

just bought the /93 model (china) and want to get a usable upgrade so I can have DTS. Suggestions?

Philips hasn’t released an official yet- will installing another version (like /37) kill it?
thanks

Reply

I couldn't be sure. I know you can put a /12 firmware on a /37 and change it back. But you can't put a /37 on a /12.

If you want to try it (at your own risk) then rename the BIOS file to _93 instead of _37. Remember that once you have upgraded it if you want to go back to /93 you'll have to have a /93 firmware to do it. Also because your player will now think it is a /37 you'll have to rename it to _37 to get it to take the firmware. You might try getting a serial cable so that you can restore your player if it goes terribly wrong, and before you do anything backup your firmware....

Return it to where you bought it...

You get the firmware back on it with a serial cable but I think it requires some advanced knowledge...

Is there any way to disable the standby mode? lts a pain in my ass everytime i pause a movie to get something to eat i only have 30 minutes before it shutdowns. THE old model dvp_642 gave you the option to turn it off Thanks

Have a read of the forum on the softpedia board. Someone managed to do it.

The Porkupan firmwares now have a resume function. This means you can jump to the last point you were in a file. Very handy and removes the need for standby off feature...

Hi,

First of all many, many thanks for site! Awesome resource!

I have a question however.

I have two Divx files. One 720p (1280×720) and the other 1080i. Neither of these will playback the video (fine on PC), just sound. The ‘video resolution not supported’ error message appears (my Samsung LCD can run up to 1366×768 or 720p)

Seeing as the maximum resolution is limited to 720×576 or 720×480 am I correct in assuming that playing a true HD source (an Avi at 720p i.e. 1280×720 or 1080i) will not work? Is there any way to upgrade the max resolution supported?

If not, do you have any advice to obtaining a device with all the options we love on this unit (USB, Divx, Xvid, HDMI, Component, DTS etc.) with the support for the HD and full HD resolutions?

Thanks in advance.

Reply

No, they will not play. And there is no way to upgrade the player to support higher res files. It has the processing power and memory to support only it's max resolution...

You could try a modded XBox... There'll be a tutorial on XBox modding going up on this site over the next few weeks...

I have a big concern and wonder if anyone else has had this problem:
I just purchased the 5960 ( manufactured in April 2007 ) and have set it up by plugging it into my Tv through the component( 3 cables ) and I am not using progressive as my tv does not support it.

When I plugged in my usb key ( Sandisk cruzer 2GB Titanium ) it recognized it immediately and played an avi with no problems. One thing however, is that on fast forward it will show 2x , 4x, 8x, 16x and 32x, but will not move foreward faster than about 2x. I suspect that this is due to the usb not being able to be accessed fast enough to allow that speed of fast foreward.

Of bigger concern however, is that I put a DVD-R that has 6 avi’s on it in that works fine on my Philips DVP642 and my portable Philips DIVX player. The menus shows all 6 files and lists them as avi’s but two of the files would not read at all, one of the files reads but gives the message “Video resolution not supported” and plays the audio but not the video, and the other two files worked correctly.

I thought that this player was supposed to be much better than the 642!! Why will the 5960 not even read two of the files, and why is it not displaying the video for one of the files when the 642 will handle these files and display them properly on my tv. Is is a bios or settings issue ??

Thanks for your help,

Brad

Reply

The 2x issue is normal. It simply means that your key can't read that fast in USB1.1. Some USB keys are better, and some are worse...

The "Video Resolution not supported" is dealt with in the FAQ, please read it...

The other files that don't run probably have faulty headers. Simply run them through an AVI fixer and they should then run OK. The DVP642 was the most forgiving player manufactured, but due to DivX 6 Ultra certification, I would guess that some of there faulty headers now cause issues...

Hi, I have a 1080i tv with DVI input only and no digital audio input/receiver in this room, Can I run a HDMI to DVI converter to my tv, but get audio through the composite output, or does this DVD player only run the audio through HDMI when video is output through it? Thanks

Also, I’m almost sure my tv doesn’t support HDCP, since it only has a DVI input. Will this player not work for me using the hdmi out in this case?

Reply

Yes, once your not using a PB firmware it sould be OK. Composite output does not work when using a PB firmware...

Not sure about the second part, maybe someone else will answer that...

you have an excellent compilation of the information. Many thanks
i recently got this 5960/37 player.
I have several quistions
1)what is the differance btwn wireless and f-swed firmwares?
2)some of the folders in my usb drive does not expand and show the subfolders and files
3)even after moded firmware i cannot see long folder names in usb

Reply

1) Not much difference, a wireless firmware with PB is the same as FSwed's

2) You just have too many folders. Max 600 per directory...

3) That's right, you can't. Nor will you be able to. Read the FAQ!!!

There is currently no firmware that displays long filenames over USB...

I'm currently using the wireless2104 firmware with PB support. If your using HDMI and 5.1 sound you'll need to use a version without PB...

Sorry to ask in this page because I know it is dedicated to the 5960, however, does anyone know the difference between the DVP5982C1/37 and the DVP5982/37 by Philips. These players are the replacement of the DVP5960 I would think.

Reply

Afraid I don't know. I'd say there is probably no difference. Simply country codes or something like that... Usually when the codes are that similar that's all it means...

This model is simply the 5960 with 1080p upscaling. The 5960 only goes as far as 1080i, other than that there is no difference, new upscaling chip that's all. Unless you intend to use 1080p I'd go with the 5960. There's a lot more support and firmware upgrades available for it...

Hi – My 5960 recognizes only a partial amount of mp3 files on my Maxtor OT II (300). Some mp3 files are there, play perfectly; others show folders, but no mp3 files within. At first, I thought it may have been the varying bit rates but that’s not it. The mp3 files that are there play great, but I can’t figure why others mp3’s don’t show up in their respective folders. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have a 5960/05 with Philips firmware 12.06.36.40. If I play an XVID file with Dolby Digital AC3 6 channel audio, it will only show as ‘2 channel’ when pressing the ‘Audio’ button to check. It shows as DD 5.1 OK when playing proper DVDs though. Is this correct?

Reply

You need to pass the audio to an external amplifier using the digital coax output. I wouldn't trust the audio readout from an xvid file... I'd say the audio is fine, it's just reported wrong... The player might not even be able to report xvid audio type correctly it may always default to reporting 2 channel.

Hi.

I had a problem with my new samsung 23” LCD TV when connected to my 5960 using the hdmi cable.

The picture would judder, know matter what DVD i played.

I found that the auto hdmi setting on the 5960 was the problem.

if you have the same problem manually select the hdmi resolution instead of using auto.

I am using an unmodified 12.06.36.40 firmware

I’ve one question: – When using a modded firmware with PB support (Wireless2104 or MTZ) and using a HDMI cable to connect the player to the TV set you get no sound at all? (Using the HDMI-HDMI connection cable):

Do you get any sound on the TV?
Do you get any sound on the amplifier if using RCA cables(red and white)?
Do you get any sound if using the coaxial out connect to the amplifier?

Looking forward for replys!

I’ve been blown away by the quality of DiVX videos played from the USB port to my 37” LCD over HDMI. But I was really disappointed to find that it took up to 15 seconds to view a JPEG image from my Digital Camera – forget looking at a slideshow!

Has anyone done any work on improving the speed of displaying High def JPEGs?

By the way, Microsoft only has a patent on FAT32 in the US. And the unit clearly does support FAT32 – otherwise it wouldn’t be able to read files off FAT32 formatted devices. It just doesn’t support long file names. That, and the really slow JPEG performance really take the shine of what could be a brilliant piece of equipment. I’d have bought one for my parents and my inlaws, both of whom enjoy their digital cameras immensely if it wasn’t for those two very simple flaws in an otherwise excellent player.

I think Microsoft also has a patent relating to long filenames in FAT32. I think it's only free to use if you use 8 letter filenames, that's what I understood of it anyway...

I use AVS Video Converter, it's part of AVS Video Tools and costs around $20-$30. even to PSP or Ipod format... Make sure you re-encode at the highest possible quality... Upscaling simply fills on all the extra dots on a HDTV when viewing regular video (480p), it supposed to show more detail without having a higher resolution source video...

Yes you will definitely see an improvement. I also have a 16:9 CRT TV and it's the reason I bought the player in the first place. When you convert to DVD you lose quality (going from MPEG4(xvid,divx) to MPEG2 - All MPEG standards are lossy, meaning even going from divx to xvid loses quality...). With the player you'll see the movies in the quality they were meant to be watched in...

Ok, I’ve been looking into this black bars issue with HDMI upscaling. 480p = reliable and well tested technology. HDTV = new, young technology. It will take some time for hardware manufacturers to catch up with the standards...

The following is a list of resolutions that are common to 16:9 TV sets (1.77:1):

  • 1920×1080 (1080i/p)
  • 1366×768
  • 1280×720 (720i/p)
  • 1024×576
  • 852×480 (480i/p)
  • 640×360

So if your video is not in 16:9 ratio how it is displayed is upto your TV/DVD player...

Previous to HDTV, standard television sets would resize images to fit the screen. Such as a 16:9 TV set displaying a 4:3 signal. The standard with HDTV is that anything less than 16:9 such NTSC, PAL etc. will display in pillar box (black bars at the side) and anything greater such as some movies etc will display in letter box (black bars at the top and bottom).

It should also be noted that many older DVD’s today are actually recorded with the black bars already on them…

It is wise to ignore 480p when testing. Almost any TV set can convert a 4:3, 14:9. 16:9 signal to fill the screen, remember these TV’s have been around for a very long time…

Yes, that is correct. I have even some small DVD image file somewhere that shows a number of colored bars around the picture, which is very convenient to measure overscan (I can send it to anyone who wants it). Using that on DVP5900 I found out that 480p has a noticeable overscan (at least about 5mm), 720p is perfect and 1080i has a slight overscan (about 3mm). Saying that, you can clearly see that my main issue with the player is not that I cant use upscaling but that I have to bear with overscan, because the black bars are not an acceptable trade off for me (especially the one on the rights side).

My connection is HDMI-HDMI.

djCRETSTONE what is your connection?

Apr 11, 06:34 AM #

Black Bars…

I’ve noticed slight black bars even when playing a 1.85:1 ratio dvd at 720p and 1080i.

It could be the overscanning on the HDTV, but I when I switched to 480p and back to the higher resolutions….480p did not have the bars, but it does crop some of the horizontal information on the sides.

When jumping back up to 720p or 1080i, there was a small amount of add’l picture info on the sides.

The best way to see this is when you pause a DVD at a point where there is a noticeable object near the side of the image, and then jump from 480p to 720p,1080i..and back and forth

I’ll gladly take this trade-off, because you are really getting the “whole” image.

Apr 10, 09:12 PM #
by djCRESTONE

@chris57 okay, apparently it works fine for you, but as I said the movie aspect ratio has nothing to do with this issue. With your disc I would have black bars even in menu – actually, as my tv has the ability to display picture in its original resolution, I can clearly see that what is coming from the player already has the black bars.

Naturally there can be three causes of this issue:

1) the player – some of the units may be faulty although I dont find it too plausible

2) the tv – possibly some tvs cant cope with the way the player treats the picture. this is not entirely out of the question, however, it worked fine on a previous model.

3) the connection – is your connection HDMI-HDMI? it might be a HDMI-DVI specific problem. it might also be a bad cable, although thats pushing it quite far.

krypton22 said: “I am not that stupid”, who said you were stupid? I was trying to be helpful, thats all. I also said that my comments were ‘just first thoughts’ hoping perhaps for some mature constructive feedback. My comment was actually in reply to phunkyfish’s request for feedback by the way, that was why I posted my TV make as he was trying to see if it may be related to certain brand/s.

Here’s a test with Retail PAL Reservoir Dogs Region 2.

Gspot reports all vobs including the menu as 720×576.

Playback shows the menu as 720×576 filling the whole screen no matter whether 720p or 1080i. The movie however plays with black bars at top and bottom despite Gspot reporting it as 720×576, this would be why the aspect ratio is reported as 2.35:1 on the box.

Playback on Peekton 6006 non HDMI is exactly the same as with the Phillips.

Playback on PS3 is also exactly the same.

I cannot see any problem that is specific to the Phillips.

No, I am really not that stupid. The bars actually appear even before you play any movie, just with the menu picture. Needless to say, it didnt happen with my previous player, DVP5900 – actually it was one of the few things that player did right.

Im beginning to think that the black bar issue when you have them at both the top and bottom may be simply down to movies being filmed in 1:2.35 as opposed to 1:1.75.

Watched a film which GSpot reports as :-

640×272 or 40:17. Assuming my Sony LCD TV is 16:9 then there are always going to be black bars at the top and bottom of the screen unless the image is cropped on the left and right. Something I obviously wouldn’t want.

Just first thoughts as I dont have any black bars with WS HD TV xvids only movies.

I'm afraid this means your USB devices are not supported. Unless they are not formatted correctly. The flash drive must be formatted either FAT or FAT32 and the external drive as FAT32. You'll find instructions on my page about it...

in fact what I’m trying to do is a cp1253 narrow font set in order to have a 50+ number of chars per line

Check the softpedia board. A lot of guys there also tried creating font sets containing 50 chars or more. I think they were using swedish or danish though...

As I reported earlier, my player does display the “black bars issue” at both 720p and 1080i regardless whether its PAL or NTSC movie. Actually Ive already had a (email) talk about it with Philips support and theyve told me to install the latest firmware and if I already have it, hand the machine to a service provider. In another words “sod off as we dont give a damn”.

I forgot to mention my tv is a BenQ 3250.

Recently purchased the DVP5960/12 player & the vast amount of avi files I’ve thrown at it have played without any issues (using fw 12.06.36.24).

Yesterday I hooked it up to “400GB Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 HD”. I am planning store all my AVI’s e.t.c. on this drive.

I copied a dozen files onto the drive & the playback is fine but as you guys all know the 8.3 short file names in “USB” mode make it quite difficult identify your files, especially if you’ve got a huge amount of them.

Is there any hope for a future firmware fix for “USB” file names issue?

regards

No, I'm afraid not. Microsoft owns long filenames support on FAT32. Which makes it very hard for anyone else to support it...

ive just bought one of these, the divx auto aspect ratio detection doesn’t work my TV just displays them in 4.3, any ideas?

What aspect is your TV? Are you PAL or NTSC? What are the TV settings on your player set to? Are you playing divx or xvid files. Check the aspect ratio of the files in GSpot (on downloads page) and report them back too... You manual will tell you how to check the TV settings on your player...

OK, I need to find out how the player performs under HDMI in 480p, 720p, 1080p as regards black bars at the top/bottom of the screen. I’d like reports for both PAL and NTSC please. When I have enough reports I’ll add the info to the page. We need to figure out if it’s an issues with specific TV’s or with HDMI interface on the player…

I have a Philips 5960.At the top of this page you say it can play XviD as well as DivX. Mine plays DivX but not XviD,although it will play the sound.I get a message that says something along the lines of Codec Not Supported. It has Firmware Version 37.06.42.29 Is there a way to get it to play XviD files burned on a DVD,because at the moment I have to re-encode them to DivX which takes too long.

Reply

It should play xvid files. All video files must be in either an AVI or DIVX container... Try downloading the packed bitstream files on the downloads page and try them. They are all xvid. Also, open the files in question with GSpot and see that the 4C (CCCC) is set ti xvid?

I have the 5960 with an Olevia 37” 720p TV. It seems that the HDMI input does not fill the screen. there are black bars at the top and bottom. Is this a known issue with this model? Thanks.

I know there's an issue with a black bar at the bottom of the screen at 1080p. If anyway else with a NTSC player could confirm this behaviour please?

Hello,
Thank you for your time and consideration.
How can I watch a XviD using DVP5960/12?

Reply

Burn the xvid AVI onto a DVD. Put it in the player. Select the file and press play. U could also player the file from a USB key or an external hard drive, you just have to press the USB key first...
